Tanzania is perfect as a family holiday destination, particularly for all those visitors with an adventurous spirit.

Children will be encouraged to learn about the national culture through a variety of exhibits such as the one at the Olduvai Gorge or the historic House of Wonders, but where adventure is concerned they’ll be kept entertained on balloon flights over the Serengeti or on a trip to Prison Island. Tanzania is coolest from June until October and has considerably less rain at this time of year as well.

Things to do in Tanzania with Children

Unless you’re fit enough to climb Kilimanjaro you might want to find an alternative method of getting the best view of the Serengeti National Park. Hot air balloon rides will delight children and adults alike, and they leave from the Serengeti Plains or the inspiring Masaai Mara. Most trips leave at dawn, and some include breakfast prepared for you in the African outback. Minimum age is usually no younger than 7 years old, and all travellers must be physically fit.

Low level safari tours of the Serengeti are a huge hits with children, and jeep tours are available for even young children. They will love seeing the elephants and lions close up, and with varying tour companies making stops at safari tree houses for lunch, it will be a real adventure for them all.

Children will enjoy spending plenty of time at the beach and the Island of Zanzibar is one stretch of sand that you won’t want to miss. It is a small island just off the coastline next to Dar es Salaam, and is one long beach broken only by Zanzibar Town itself. The island is a short boat trip from mainland Tanzania, and is a Mecca for all things touristy, including playing on its sandy shores.

Staying in Zanzibar, you might want to check out the Butterfly Centre, a unique display of live Tanzanian butterflies. Children will love the colourful creatures and learn about how they are bred and harvested as sustainable income for the local community. The whole project is situated within an enclosed area of tropical plants and fauna.

The House of Wonders is a fascinating display of artifacts that depict the changes in Tanzanian history. It is housed in an impressive building in the centre of Zanzibar Town and is full of interesting exhibits for all ages to enjoy.

Zanzibar is the point from which most tours head off to the surrounding islands, and all children will be fascinated by a trip on a local dhow (African boat) to Prison Island, a ten minute journey away. There is a small entrance fee to pay, but once on the island there’s plenty to do. The island was once used to keep slaves until the British built a prison on it. There is a small restaurant, plenty of wildlife to watch and snorkeling available on the beach.

Kids will enjoy a bus tour out to Olduvai Gorge which is a striking crack in the earth through an otherwise impossibly flat landscape. The attraction of this area is the fossils that were discovered in the 1930’s and the local museum is tended by a Masaai Warrior wearing traditional red clothing. The fossils were mostly human, and 35 remains have been found in total, but other interesting artifacts include a three toed horse called a Hipparion.
