Family holiday in Thailand - travelling with children to Thailand

Why the ‘Land of Smiles’ is perfect for a happy family holiday

Not without good reason is Thailand known as the ‘land of smiles’. No longer exclusive to backpackers and gap-year travellers, Thailand is becoming increasingly popular as a family holiday destination thanks to its warm climate, stunning beaches, low cost of living, hospitable culture and a wealth of exciting things for mums, dads and kids to see and do.

Families with smaller children may find a beach holiday on one of the quieter Thai islands such as Kho Samet, or Kho Samui which offer safe sandy beaches, warm waters, beautiful scenery and a thoroughly relaxed atmosphere. Older children who enjoy discovering new places and experiences will be thrilled by the east-meets-west vibrancy of Bangkok and its spectacular temples, or the ancient and modern mix evident in cities such as Chiang-Mai and Chiang Rai. Family-friendly activities in Thailand’s cities and surrounding areas include everything from elephant rides to water parks, and river boat trips to bowling alleys. Food is rarely a problem either; whilst Thai cuisine is both varied and delicious, fast food restaurants are almost as prevalent in Thailand’s cities as they are anywhere else. Adventurous families, however, should not pass up the opportunity to try Thailand’s outstanding street food.

The Thai year can loosely be split into three seasons. The very best time to visit Thailand is from the middle of November to the middle of February, when the entire country enjoys a warm, dry and sunny climate. From late February to June Thailand can become unbearably hot and humid, making travelling any distance uncomfortable and increasing the risks of sunburn or heatstroke. June to early October is Thailand’s monsoon season, and whilst this may mean lower flight and accommodation costs the weather can be at best unpredictable and at worst unforgiving.

Please check out your government recommendations for vaccinations and advice before you travel.
