Families will love the exotic Maldives, where relaxing on a quiet beach is second nature. These idyllic coral atolls are the perfect place for building sandcastles.
Lying in the middle of the Indian Ocean are the stunning islands of the Maldives. This string of Atolls, unique coral land masses that surround calm sea lagoons, stretch on for miles in the blue ocean. Each one is as individual as the next, but one thing they do have in common is a reputation as a luxury holiday destination. Despite their small sizes, these islands have plenty to offer interested children, and you don’t have to look hard to find enough activities to keep them interested.
When it comes to the Maldives, there are some islands that specifically cater for children, and some that don’t. It’s their way of making sure that adults on a child-free holiday can find their perfect location just as much as those actively seeking a family adventure. But with over a thousand islands to choose from, there will always be plenty that are delighted to see children of all ages. For example, the island of Dhigu is so happy to have kids along, that they even provide a mini welcome pack that includes kids toiletries and a rocket toy to build!
The islands are split into the North and South Atolls, and each has a different seasonal variation, so the best time to visit really depends upon where you’re heading to. Having said that, it’s generally agreed that although the dry season is mainly (particularly in the main tourist locations) the least amount of rain falls between November and March. January to March can be quite humid though, so the best time to go is probably through November and December.
It will come as no surprise that the Maldives offers plenty of water sports for visitors to enjoy, and scuba diving is one of the most popular activities thanks to the vibrant marine life found in the many coral reefs of the Atolls. Children are welcome to take part, but individual tour operators have different age limits so it’s best to check in advance. Banana reef is one of those ideal locations that is favoured by the locals as well as the tourists.
Male is the capital city of the Maldives, and is a great family location for a day away from the beaches. Once the home of Kings, the city is steeped in history and there are plenty of cultural activities to enjoy. Visit the Grand Friday Mosque, built n 1656 by a Sultan, it now houses the tombs of ancient rulers, original artifacts and unique artwork. Male is also a vibrant shopping destination and the whole family will enjoy a day spent enjoying the delights of this exotic community.
The Maldives have some unique boat trips available for travelers. Known as ‘Liveaboards’, these unique cruisers will whisk whole families off for a few days on the ocean. Spend your time snorkeling, fishing and swimming from these luxurious craft. Your food and drink is provided, and some operators will even allow you to navigate your own craft.
Kids Clubs are available in most of the child friendly resorts, and they each offer different levels of service. Most clubs will take children from toddler years; if not below, which means that mum and dad don’t have to worry when they head off for a spot of scuba diving or a luxurious spa treatment.
