The oriental city of Shanghai offers a heady mix of Asian culture and modern attractions which make boring family holidays a thing of the past.

Located on the eastern coastline of China, Shanghai is an ancient port town that grew into a commercial hub in the early 1900’s. It is one of the world’s most influential cities, but as well as its impressive economical climate, it is also one of the world’s favourite holiday destinations.

Shanghai has a history that predates the Ming Dynasty, and everywhere you look throughout the city, you will find ancient buildings lying amidst modern skyscrapers and shopping malls. The traditional architecture is also evident in many of the traditional temples and sacred sites throughout the city and the surrounding countryside, and these offer delightful attractions to visit for families on holiday here.

The culture of Shanghai is acknowledged through its many museums and exhibitions, but if culture is the furthest thing from your mind when you’re on holiday with your children, then this city offers plenty of family friendly attractions to enjoy.

One of the best times to visit this vibrant city is in October, just in time for its Tourism Festival. The city grinds to a halt to enjoy this extravagant spectacle, and as well as a stunning opening parade, with traditional Chinese Dragons and dancers to delight the crowd, there is an impressive fireworks display that all kids will be delighted to watch.

The climate in Shanghai is usually warm, although it’s worth noting that its location on the coastline means that it tends to get some windy weather that can turn the air cold. If you’re travelling in September to October then you’ll get the best temperatures, being neither too hot nor too cold. These months are also outside the rainy season so you’ll stand less chance of getting wet, but a downside is that most recorded typhoons have struck in September.
