Take your family holiday in the stunning Florida Keys, with a different island to experience every day.

The Florida Keys are a fantastic collection of islands that stretch away, one after the other, into the sea. To the east is the Atlantic, to the west lies the Gulf of Mexico, and to the south lies the Florida Straits, cutting the islands off from the Caribbean. This unique collection of islands has long been thought of as a dream destination for couples, but while that is definitely true it must also be pointed out that there is a side to the Keys that is most definitely aimed at children.

Key Largo is the first island in the chain and is surprisingly full of wildlife, despite its small size. This is the location for two of Florida’s state parks, a national park and a marine sanctuary to name but a few.

The popular island of Marathon is one of the smallest inhabited islands and lies in the middle of the chain. The community here are friendly and welcoming, with a strong sense of family that is never more demonstrated than when they hold one of their family friendly seafood festivals.

The further down the island chain you go, the quieter and less commercialized the islands become. Big Pine Key attracts families in their droves to enjoy the quiet relaxation of this tiny piece of land, or to enjoy some fishing or water sports. You’ll find plenty of RV’s here with families making the most of their days on vacation.

Key West, the final destination at the tip of the chain, plays host to visiting cruise liners, including the unmistakable Disney ships with the image of Mickey Mouse emblazoned on their funnels. It is also home to the famous colonial-style architecture, and visitors enjoy the best seafood restaurants for miles around.

The chance to swim with dolphins is always an attractive proposition for a child, and the Theatre of the Seas in Islamorado will keep the whole family entertained with their Bottlenosed Dolphin display. A visit to Pigeon Key, just south of Marathon, can only be taken by ferry, which is a great way to get kids out onto the water around the islands. Once on this tiny island there is a Marine Science Center that encourages children to collect different marine species and examine them scientifically. Expert guidance and equipment is provided. For younger children, a trackless train provides entertaining rides. More details...

Key West is home to the Hilton Hotel, which provides a climbing wall for children (and adults) who are 3 years old or over. It is also home to the Conch Train, a tourist train that runs the length of the island’s main attractions and is a great trip for the family to take together.

For a fun family night, head for the lobby of the La Concha Hotel in Key West. A nightly ghost walk leaves from this location, guided by a caped man carrying a lantern. You’ll be guided to a number of haunted locations where the mysterious tales of their individual ghosts will be narrated to you. There is no age limit for the tour but parents should be aware that the walk takes around 80 minutes.

Families will love to take advantage of the surrounding oceans, enjoy a relaxing cruise aboard the Fury, a 19 metre catamaran, as you sail off into the Caribbean from Key West or charter a boat as a group. Some of these tours include snorkeling and swimming at suitable locations, and many of them provide lunch as part of the package so that you can really enjoy a full day away together.
